Desktop: xfce.

Main use for the desktop is just to open multiple terminal sessions.
The editor I use is vim (I got used to the original vi whilst at
university in the mid-1980s - Ultrix on a Dec 8650, and graduated to
vim when I started using linux. I've often wondered if Sherlock Holmes
could have figured out from a keyboard if the owner was a habitual user
of vi or vim - from the extra wear on the ESC key).

The mail client I use is evolution. It used to be quite buggy, and I
almost switched to thunderbird - but evolution seemed to get a lot more
stable, and it's got a lot of features. Also, I guess I'm used to the
interface.

Main GUI apps I use are firefox, LibreOffice (does what I need, but I
always dread using it on a new installation, as I know I'll need to
spend several hours turning off all the "helpful" automated correction
and completion stuff), VLC, audacity, musescore, gimp and xfig (in
spite of its rather old interface, I find this a very powerful drawing
tool).

Martin - thanks for starting this thread. I'm really enjoying reading
it, and it's given me a lot of ideas.
