Markdown is a markup language for creating formatted text using a plain-text
editor. So, to display the formatted text you need a Markdown viewer or a
Markdown editor with the preview feature (i.e. ReText).

I think that's right. A Markdown file is not an HTML file... There are
various browser extension to "add" to the browse the ability to display the
formatted content of a md file.

The git store display you the content of the md file formatted as HTML.
