It depends on the phone. In some cases you need to press the Power (as in my previous phone),
or the Power and the Volume down botton. That might show you a menu with containing a screenshoter.

If not, you may need to swipe down from the top of your screen (this is the case in my current phone).
And you also might need to swipe right to find the icon.

You can record the screen in a similar way, i.e. swiping down from the top of the screen.
