I (or rather my son) ran a postfix + courier + spam assassin system on
Ubuntu 14.4 (the last pre-systemd Ubuntu) on a linode server until
about 5 years ago when we discovered (or rather Linode warned us) we
had a postfix misconfiguration and an open relay and in fixing it took
over and decided it needed updating so moved to devuan + postfix +
dovecot + rspamd on a local NUC server. Dovecot seemed a better option
than Courier at the time.
"Dovecot is a mail server whose major goals are security and extreme
reliability. It tries very hard to handle all error conditions and
verify that all data is valid, making it nearly impossible to crash. It
supports mbox/Maildir and its own dbox/mdbox formats, and should also
be pretty fast, extensible, and portable."

Daedalus is currently on Dovecot 1:2.3.19.1 (stable) or 1.2.3.21.1
(backports) so presumable this will only become an issue, for me, when
we migrate stable to Excalibur.
Can we anticipate there will be a sensible re-configuration guide at
that point, or clear guidance to pin to 3.x.
Clearly some of you have been playing with how to do it.
