That is a very generic question. How is your mail stored? And where? How
often do you like to backup it? Care to elaborate a bit more?

I still POP3 download all my mails and have them rsync'd to several backup
disks from time to time.

I do have IMAP for handy access, but it is by duplicating all mail to
another account on the mail server. A cron job then removes mails older
than a certain age from the second account automatically. So handy has
only access to recent mails. I rarely use the mail client on it.

Reason for this I want to limit the amount of mails an attacker gets
access to in the (hopefully) unlikely event of a successful attack on my
server.

I am interested in JMAP but so far support for this is very limited.
Stalwart mail server supports it. I just got aware of it this week.
However I am not sure whether I am going to have a go with Stalwart
anytime soon. I am happy enough with my Postfix, Dovecot and rspamd setup.

Also only a very few clients seem to support JMAP. And Akonadi does not so
far, it seems.

Best,
