Linux from scratch https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
would be easy for you as you already are proficient in linux
(just more work to DIY).
The BSDs that I've tried, mainly TRUEBSD/PCBSD, at that time
were just like the first linux distros mostly working with
luck and the right hardware but a little rough on the edges
(they just don't played nice with the grub bootloader and had
a bad habit to overwrite it with their own stuff, so I scrapped them,
probably my own fault but laziness won).
