Just an update. Finally got around to this again. Got it running this way:

aptitude purge steam-launcher
aptitude purge nvidia*
aptitude install steam
aptitude install nvidia-driver


I think purging everything and then installing again with the i386 repos
enabled did the trick. Thanks for all the help!
