Which is non-free distributable. Both Debian and Devuan have a "non-free"
section that's disabled by default but available from all the usual mirrors.
Just edit /etc/apt/sources.list (or sources.list.d/*) and replace "main"
with "main contrib non-free"; steam is available there. There's another
hurdle: it's for i386 only (despite most modern games wanting amd64) -- but
the installer enables i386 multi-arch by default; if it's not enabled on
your box please "dpkg --add-architecture i386".

There's a number of reason why proprietary software is bad, but if you want
to use it anyway, it's much better to use the packaged client which has been
beaten to play nice with the rest of the distribution rather than the
vendor's version.
