I did forget one thing in my original email that might be a Devuan only
problem:
The shutdown menu in KDE now has suspend and hibernate options. However,
they only appear after restarting the display manager. I was guessing it
had something to do with dbus not starting early enough. However,
changing the order of the init scripts did not fix it. I had to put a
few lines in rc.local to restart sddm two times with a few second delay.
That was ugly and I also wondered what else was not working as well as
it could. So I then did the clean install.

That is interesting. Devuan ascii /w KDE works fine from what I
experienced. I use it on my main travel workstation running mostly
kdevelop. I do not see any real improvement over 4. So I would delay the
upgrade for as long as possible, which is my plan for my other workstation.
