By all means try the NVidia native driver from NVidia itself. It might
solve your problems.
In my case, although the NVidia provided driver lessened or eliminated
the freezes, it produced all sorts of video artifacts that interfered
with my reading my screen. Also, you need to get rid of every single
vestige of the Free Software drivers to get the commercial drivers to
work, and that involves quite a bit more than removing one package. I
think you were supposed to remove two packages and blacklist one or
more drivers. There were just a lot of variables involved.
