In reverse chronological order:

Current:                   XFCE or Mate, according to the machine and
primary user
Prior to Systemd:    Gnome-2 and KDE
In the Beginning:    CDE
Prehistory:              Sun, Apollo, SGI and some other BSD work stations

I use mate terminal as the best of the bunch, for me, derivatives of the
original Gnome terminal. Both mate and XFCE seem to use each others
applications without a hitch.
