I can only speak to how I deal with it, though using asound.conf isn't
a method I tried using. I just edit the last line of
/etc/default/espeakup before I start espeakup. I haven't needed sound
for anything else in the minimal ISO so far, so that's as far as I got
with setting cards there.

Oh Yes, yes, yes! When the minimal live was first created, this was
the top most requested feature. The debian/devuan installer already
asks the user to
"please press enter to activate this sound card", and I
passed on the script responsible for it to katolaZ, but I don't
believe anything else was done with that.

The mate desktop is what I use here on all my GUI machines, and it is
the default offered when installing devuan with speech. So, I have
experience as far as
using it. I'm not sure if that's the experience you have in mind, or
something else. I'd be willing to try the mate ISO you created, and
give you my feedback on it.
