Right.

What you need here is a straightforward *and* easily maintained
installation, not one you have to jump through hoops to get working.

That said, I think that the *easiest* thing for you to do is to find
a NIB or properly working CD-ROM to replace the faulty one.

With respect to CD burning, there are quite a few Linux utilities you
can use to burn a CD in your own Linux machine.

Easy and straightforward, no magic involved..

Once you get *that* done, you'll be able to boot a Devuan Live *.iso
and show your aunt how it works.

And most importantly, see how she gets along with the interface, etc.
