Here's a data point: My Void Linux computer has an NVMe drive as the
root drive. Check this out:

[slitt@mydesk alsa]$ lsmod | grep -i nvme
[slitt@mydesk alsa]$

The following command, done as root, shows the evolution of my NVMe
drive during boot:

I have no nvme module loaded.

[root@mydesk wpa_supplicant]# dmesg | grep -i nvme
[ 6.131970] nvme nvme0: pci function 0000:01:00.0
[ 6.143811] nvme nvme0: Shutdown timeout set to 10 seconds
[ 6.149754] nvme nvme0: 32/0/0 default/read/poll queues
[ 6.155547] nvme0n1: p1 p2
[ 6.311754] EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p1): mounted filesystem with ordered
data mode. Opts: (null) [ 6.384550] EXT4-fs (nvme0n1p1): mounted
filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null) [ 6.413882] dracut:
Mounted root filesystem /dev/nvme0n1p1 [ 10.587376] EXT4-fs
(nvme0n1p1): re-mounted. Opts: (null) [ 13.994106] EXT4-fs
(nvme0n1p1): re-mounted. Opts: (null) [root@mydesk wpa_supplicant]#

The preceding command MUST be done as root.
