Hi,
something like (at the end of startx?):

#export DISPLAY=:0.0 (should be set)
# turn off
xset -display $DISPLAY dpms force off
# read keyboard input
read dummy
# turn on again if keyboard active
xset -display $DISPLAY dpms force on

Untested.
