I wondered about that i386 too. It has an
AMD64 processor and runs an AMD64
kernel:

april:/farhome/hendrik# uname -a

But, I figured, didn't 64-bit machines boot as 32-bit and then switch modes
early in the boot procedure?

Still puzzled what to do, though. Perhaps there's some parameter I should
have specified at original gpt partitioning time?
