Thanks. Yes, it seems I have udev. The link is helpful, I think it
probably would solve the problem. However, these specific cables lack a
reportable serial number

and thus they seem to put me in an untenable situation. I've just tried
some of them on another box with a different distro and also get a
serial number of 0 there too. So I think I am probably stuck with
wandering device names.
