This area is not my forte, but are you quite sure of the line in
,profile that says:
xmodmap -e "add Hyper_L = $spare_modifier"

Since $spare_modifier is 'Hyper_L', it becomes:
xmodmap -e "add Hyper_L = Hyper_L"
which looks like a good candidate for gaining a complaint.
