OSS has change alot.

These days you are excluded if you do not toe some social-political line.
The word "professionalism" is bandied about.

It used to be a hobby. People understood you were doing this for free.
The government was not involved. It was not on the radar.

Now, you're banned and your contributions claimed to not exist if you do not
toe the social-progressive (feminist etc) line. The government is involved.
Opensource is on the radar, and is no longer a bazzar but instead has in
place "governance" (you see this talked about by SJWs in both debian and
in legal circles that are trying to co-opt russian and middle eastern republics:
same sort of people, same ideas, totally different than the old opensource
movement), and "Community standards".

It's not enough that you contribute, and have done so for many years,
no that's not enough, infact it's not required that you contribute
code or media,
no what is required is that you toe the pro-feminist pro-SJW party line.
(example of an opensource project being Deleted because feminists
didn't like it/ the author: esr.ibiblio.org/?p=1310 )

The same situation exists in science. The same transition happened.

Its been coopted, as all good things are.
