I've found a tentative solution, and that is to explicitly and manually
set the terminal charset to iso-8859-1 instead of utf-8
(Terminal/Charset in Gnome Terminal). This is not very elegant, but it
works. :-) But the program doesn't seem to handle unicode properly.
