your guess is right, its X causing the problem, but the solution is
simply remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf from the nest, then it will be created
again by 2.2

the problem is caused by the upgrade to Xorg 7.1 in 2.2 which also
changed installation prefix so certain parts of the xorg.conf changed.
