If its just X causing trouble, you could boot into 2.1, save
/etc/X11/xorg.conf somewhere, then boot into 2.2 and drop it back into
/etc/X11/ . I had this problem with a i810 chip, xorg was trying to
load an "nv" driver when I used a nest for some reason.
