With printer USB connected through a hub, the printer worked again.

My troubleshooting effort was inadequate. Should have checked
connectivity with lsusb and made sure that was OK before thinking of
software. The abiword message about the printer connection was another
hint of a hardware problem.

# tail -n 100 -f /var/log/cups/error_log
should show a connectivity problem also.

This weekend can try the USB cable on the original socket again.
See whether it works. If not, whether cleaning fixes it.
