Thanks for all the suggestions. It is going to take time and effort to
work through all the options and my time is limited just now :-)

But I have a little more information that gives *some* hope that I might
be able to use an opensource alternative.

However, I have found this:-
"Most VPN applications are not compatible with the University VPN service as they do not support
multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Cisco AnyConnect and Cisco Secure Client are currently the only supported VPN applications,
any others could stop working without notice.
"

The mention of "others" gives me hope.

I need to understand just what the MFA support entails.
