An alternative to the automated upgrade is a fresh install of the
candidate system. In most machines, the HDD is large enough to have
two or more /root parts.
Eg. root1, root2. If a working system is in root2, install the
candidate in root1. Reboot to test. If it works, good. In case the
fresh system is unusable, revert to the older system easily.
One /home is mostly OK. To be fastidious about user specific
configuration, make a home part for each root. That avoids
complications from revions in ~/.config & etc.
