Both Pale Moon and Chromium. dmsg after re-boot indicates a problem
with ICEWM.

I do *NOT* want X server of the remote application. In my original
post, I mentioned that I want the VM on the remote machine to remain
running, even if my main machine crashes. With remote X, I'm
effectively running the app on my main machine.
