Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions.
Updating list with revised information.
A clean install (including repartitioning the whole drive) using the
Excalibur 'rc1' iso restored the audio, which is working at the moment.
The use of a 'targeted' initrd seems to get it working, the use of a
'generic' one doesn't. The use of a usb webcam seemed to be the kiss of
death: the audio worked up to the point that it was plugged in, and
didn't work thereafter; unplugging and rebooting didn't help, but
reinstalling into fresh partitions proved to be quicker and more
reliable than trying to troubleshoot. The usb webcam is probably
faulty: it also took down the sound on a windows 11 laptop, although
the W11 sound worked after unplugging the webcam and rebooting.
The revised installer works very well, so thanks to the efforts of the
dev(s) behind that. I have one question: on the 'usrmerge' symlinking
step, although the default option has been changed from no to yes, the
text still says that the 'no' response is the safer option. Is this
correct?
