D,
I don't speak for Devuan, but I can point you to the usrmerge
discussion on this selfsame mailing list where the Devuan developers
decided that there wasn't enough development resources to diverge from
Debian's usrmerge and that the limited resources available were to be
spent maintaining sysvinit.
As long as Linus is around I'm not too worried about the Linux kernel.
There are also other issues to get involved in if you like, such as X11
versus Wayland. Maybe a replacment for D-Bus?
