I discovered it was easier to reinstall Windows if there was a bootable Linux
around. Every time the Windows installer requested a reboot, I would boot
Linux and use it to back up the partially installed Windows system.
If I ended up with trouble in the next stage of the Windows installation,
I booted back to Linux and restored the Windows partition to a previous
not-too-bad state and resumed teh installation.
I'm not sure any more which Windows that was, but it was before XP.
