Yes, that's expected. Using /etc/asound.conf would be the way to go
about it if sound from anything other than espeakup is desired.

Am I correct in assuming that set-card and set-default-card can be run
as many times as needed until one finds the correct card? Does the
set-default-card script produce some sort of sound on the set card
after setting it?
