In my Devuan Daedalus installation (mc 4.0) I have *this* entry for
[pdf] in the extension file (lines 988 to 991 according to Jed):

Type=^PDF
Open=/usr/lib/mc/ext.d/doc.sh open pdf
View=%view{ascii} /usr/lib/mc/ext.d/doc.sh view pdf
[/code]

*.pdf files open properly with Master PDF Editor.
