Author: onefang Date: To: dng Subject: [DNG] apt ftp and rsync,
are they used? Might turn them off for my sledjhamr package mirror.
The documentation for setting up a Devuan package mirror says to let me
know if your mirror is using HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, or rsync. I suspect those
last two are not actually needed. I want to get rid of them.
Apt doesn't look like it supports rsync at all, so no idea why that's in
there.
FTP on the other hand is deprecated and disabled by default in apt, at
least on Daedalus. If you try it you get an error message telling you
you really should use HTTP or HTTPS instead.
During the recent rsync oopsie, where the latest version broke stuff, I
left sledjhamr's rsync turned off, waiting for the dust to settle. A
couple of the other package mirrors rsync to sledjhamr, though we prefer
they do so to pkgmaster. Seems to be the only usage of rsync on my server.
FTP is also only running to serve Devuan packages.
I want to turn both off, seems pointless. And I also want to remove FTP
and rsync from the package mirror instructions.
Is anybody actually using them for apt? Same question for downloading
ISOs since I run a mirror of that ta.
BTW there is apt-transport packages for a few other protocols, mostly
obscure ones I had never heard of. Doesn't seem much point in
supporting those with our package mirrors. Tor might be useful though.
