What's wrong with that? I think booting to CLI before booting to GUI is
an asset enabling you to much more easily diagnose bootup problems. I
dumped Ubuntu specifically because Ubuntu made it much too hard to boot
to CLI.

If you're worried about leaving an open CLI terminal open after X
aborts, run the command like this:

$ startx fluxbox;exit

The rest of this thread is full of pkgmgr-foo recipes to try to boot
automatically to fluxbox. Package managers have their limits: Why not
boot to CLI and then run your window manager?

The only downside I've ever seen to booting to an intermediate CLI is
that you occasionally get harmless dbus errors.
