When monitors started to gain higher and igher resolution, at first I gloried in
having multiple text windows on screen -- windows I could use together, like
one for code, another for data, another for output, and another for error messages.
Or separate windows for separate parts of a program.
I never used a tiling window manager; instead I carefully placed and sized
my windows by hand.
But the type faces got smaller and smaller as the resolutions got higher,
and my eyesight got worse at about the same rate,
and I've had to enlarge the fonts and the winows
(control-plus is lovely on the windows where it works)
and now I'm back to the old style of a few overlapping large windows.
But I don't go full-screen. I arrange the windows so each one has an edge
near the edge of the screen, and I just mouse over to the appropriate
screen edge to see the whole window. Just enough of each window is
visible that I still have an intuitive feel for where the window
is. Somehow the geographical layout is still important to me, even in
this vestigial form. I abhor full-screen. I get lost, no longer have
a feel for where everything is.
