It seems to be a method for interprocess communication,
both for transmitting data and for finding processes to talk to.
I don't know what it would do that other such methods don't do,
nor what other methods there are in Linux for this.

I have heard that Linus refused to admit it to the kernel,
complaining it was poorly designed, poorly written, and
insecure as well.
