A basic first check is the order of devices in

less /proc/asound/cards

as sometimes the system can shuffle the order(usually boot up*) and
stops sounds being audible as later programs depend on the order set in

~/.asounddrc for users or
/etc/asound.conf for the system.

A convenient gui program is qasmixer which nicely displays the cards in
their order and can fiddle setting. Caveat may crash on USB sound
devices.

Then you can use the aplay tests if you know your way around CLI,
or try vlc -> audio -> devices if a gui is easier.

* Plugging in a monitor with HDMI can also scramble it.
