crontabs can be replaced by hand written ones. That could actually be
liberating, as I find myself rewriting or disabling the provided ones
after each new installation. The provided ones are much too nanny
state for me, plus they don't handle the situation well when there's
no mail daemon, which is the usual case on non-servers for me.

The question of course is if the cron package will exist at all. I
think the Debian source package is now the upstream, is this correct?
So to save cron someone / some team would have to take over its
maintenance. I may be willing, if the need arises, but I think that's
still at least 2 Debian releases away.

What is systemd's replacement for /etc/default/* ?
