Hi Jim,
Heavy desktops have heavy dependencies. I would first try
disabling it one of the dirty ways, for example,
chmod a-x /etc/init.d/upowerd
At least that way you can know if it breaks your desktop.
Not all environments require it. On my system, it's only
pulled in by xfce, which i don't actually use.
