Look in your BIOS for some FN key setting. Some laptops have the "action" keys enabled by default. Those are things like volume, mute, brightness. So, in other words, depending on that setting, you'll need to press FN+F1 to get the usual F1 function.

Hopefully there is a setting in your BIOS to change the default.
