I am testing mine at this moment to try to reproduce what you are
saying about eth0 not working using the backend.

On my Devuan 64 bit installation the backend succeeded to connect to
eth0. The command is: backend 9 eth0

This is the output from the command:

If the wired network device is named some other name besides eth0, use
that name instead. Please report if the bug still manifests itself.

I am using:
https://git.devuan.org/devuan-packages/simple-netaid

Please note connecting to wifi and to a wired network device use
different commands.
