Check. But see below, final paragraph.

Hmm. I've got "exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4". Between
your version, the man page and /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc, you've given me a
bunch of ideas to play with, more opportunities to bang my head against
the wall. Thanks, I think.

I don't blame you. I'm an i3wm user by preference, but if I'm going to
evaluate devuan, this is what I should be doing for that.

BTW, if you're coming to dwm from openbox, check this out:

Yup, there is indication in the file /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc that the
ck-launch option "is only required for starting from a console, not a
login manager". Since I'm doing this as an evaluation, I'm still using
devuan's default Slim login manager. So, more to play with. This looks
promising in that it invites a reason for the trouble: I had originally
installed devuan as cli-only, so there was no display manager installed.
When I later added the 'task' for the default desktop, which does
include a DM (doh!), the devuan config may not have performed all the
steps that the devuan installer would have. But, at this point that's a
few jumps to conclusion.
