If your shell is bash everywhere, and your emulator groks the xterm
escape sequences, doing what I do may be best:

    PROMPT_COMMAND="echo -ne \"\E]0; $$ ${LOGNAME}@${HOSTNAME}:\${PWD} \a\""


This sets the window title to something like

    2232 itz@matica:/home/itz


no matter where you're sitting. The process number comes handy when
investigating things with tools like ps, top or lsof.
