Multiple versions of the same package with different dependencies. An
existing example would be emacs. There is a package that depends on X
and one that does not.
A preferable future example would be a daemon package that depends on
systemd and one that does not. In order to do that though, you have to
account for all the standing binary dependencies in the chain of
installation, which is something that the people pushing systend in
Debian do not want to do, but SHOULD do.
