May I suggest that at this point, changes of this significance should be
planned for the next cycle rather than thrown in at the last moment?

Which vim?

Vim can be built with features ranging from almost none beyond vi (tiny)
to a vast selection (huge), with or without integration with x11, tcl,
perl, python, lua, mzscheme, and ruby, and with your choice of curses,
Athena, GTK, Motif, or (experimental) Qt for UI.

But in my opinion, the only one of the Vim packages that belongs in the
core install is vim-tiny; anything else drags in too much.
Personally, I'd be quite happy to see that one become default,
but I realize that nano is one of a very limited number of editors that
provide adeqaute help on-screen; mcedit is the other one that I know of.

I'd probably only be using ssmtp, nullmailer, or such myself.
