I hope it works out. I hope you get many many people to help you.
I've forked things too, the key is to never look at the "jonses"
again: ignore the project you forked from most of the time. Only check
them once a year to see if there's anything you want to take for your
own project.

This way you rocket to the moon on your own stable platform.
I've forked games tho, I hope distros are like that too.
