Subject: Re: [unSYSTEM] Yay! UKIP Wins the UK european elections (were in darkwallet promo video)
There was a point a few years ago where quite a few UK libertarians thought
that UKIP stood a chance of being a good, (classical) liberal party - they
had a number of anti-state, pro individual liberty policies in their 2010
manifesto. Then again, this is the Manifesto that Farage has basically
disowned and labelled 'drivel' earlier this year:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25879302

A lot of the more libertarian members of the youth wing have jumped ship
nowadays, with the head of it sacked for publicly being in favour of gay
marriage. While they might be anti-EU and that might be a great thing for
freedom (I'm torn on this issue), UKIP have ridden the protest party wave
and are happy to pander to the disillusioned from all parties, be it
Conservatives, Labour or BNP. UKIP are becoming (and I imagine will
continue to be) increasingly authoritarian as they seek to promise all
things to all men.

While a commitment to legalising drugs and lower taxes (at least for now)
are admirable, things like restricting the movement of people, supporting
Trident, opposing gay marriage and supporting capital punishment etc etc
are all very much less so. I don't think UKIP's recent success (sadly) has
much to do with a new wave of libertarian sentiment (double sadly) so much
as frustration & boredom with the status quo, opportunism and I think a
very misplaced idea that much of people's everyday woes will be removed if
we could get rid of EU Bureaucracy / Polish people.

On a side note however, it's frustrating when UKIP are labelled 'racist'
when their discrimination isn't based upon race. They're largely xenophobic
and that is a bad thing, but really is not the same as being racist.
