..I missed this bit, aaand the fact you should have logfiles in
/var/log/Xorg.n.log or $XDG_DATA_HOME/xorg/Xorg.n.log where n
is the display number of the Xorg server.

..nouveau is usually the easier to get working, at some alleged (by
some FlightGear developers) loss of performance, IME it just works.

..yes, both the nouveau and Nvidia's drivers IME needs both free
and non-free firmware.

..I'm getting the idea your GeForce GT 1030 card may be shut down by
your old config files meant for your dead motherboard video chip.
