There is always some directory under /sys/class/brightness/ with
files you can read and one you can write. And there are tools which do
it for you, depending on your Desktop Environment.
Xfce4, comes with two tools which interact with files in
/sys/class/brightness/whatever/ under the hood:
the command xfpm-power-backlight-helper,
and a GUI you can add to the pannel, which displays battery status
and provides a cursor to adjust the brightness of the screen -- that's
the most comfortable way to obtain what you want.
