I don't know about specific conditions or deteriorating eyes yet but the
research is clear that low contrast such as grey backgrounds are worse for eye
fatigue. However the most important factor is a brightly lit room. It makes me
laugh when you see hackers on TV supposedly writing code 24/7 in a dark room
(though I guess they are using tools more than writing code).

If screen energy is a real concern for dry eyes then some screens like OLED use
less watts for black and those became common but are less common these days
(IPS). The doctors said I might have some dry eye as I had perfect vision but it
was just tiredness and reduced exercise where more breaks and a better lit room
were helpful. Switching to a white background was helping to some degree until I
did all that. I also got a screen with eye care technology which means it
scratches real easy (no glass) but I just use any screen now.
