I believe Martin Schulze now maintains sysklogd.

As far as I remember sysklogd was the default logger
on most linux systems until around 2005 or so... the
reasons for replacing it never seemed quite clear to me,
as it did the job with a substantially smaller memory
footprint than the current default, and managed to do so
without using threads.
